Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said he spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the recent developments in West Asia, welcoming the progress made in negotiations and expressing hope that ongoing diplomatic efforts would pave the way for lasting peace in the region.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi said he discussed the evolving regional situation with the Iranian President and underscored India’s interest in peace and stability.

“Spoke with the President of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, on the recent developments in West Asia. Welcomed the progress made in the negotiations and expressed hope that continued efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region. Reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait for India and the World,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Modi’s remarks come amid sustained diplomatic engagement aimed at easing tensions in West Asia following recent hostilities that raised concerns over regional security and global energy supplies. India has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means of resolving conflicts while maintaining close ties with countries across the region.

The Prime Minister’s emphasis on the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz reflects India’s strategic and economic interests. The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, carrying a substantial share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Any disruption to shipping through the strait has the potential to affect international energy markets and global trade.

India, one of the world’s largest energy importers, has repeatedly highlighted the need to ensure the safe and uninterrupted movement of commercial vessels through key international sea lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz, amid periods of heightened regional tensions.
