Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has strongly criticised the recent imposition of heavy tariffs by the United States on Indian goods, calling the move a betrayal by a so-called “friendly” nation.
Drawing parallels with BRICS nation Brazil, which has also been subjected to similar trade restrictions, she emphasised that the nearly 50 per cent tariff imposed by the US is a direct blow to India’s economic interests.
In a statement shared on social media on Thursday, Mayawati said that while the Indian government has responded by terming the US decision “unjust, unfair, and irrational,” the Indian public sees it as a “betrayal and a deliberate attempt to weaken the country.”
She urged all political parties and stakeholders to set aside their differences and act with maturity to counter this challenge effectively. “Everyone must rise above political selfishness, narrow-mindedness, and mutual hostility to ensure peace, order, and readiness within the country, under a long-term national strategy,” she said.
Mayawati also suggested that the issue deserves serious deliberation in the ongoing Parliament session. “Such a major economic challenge should be discussed at the national level in Parliament in the interest of the country. However, if both central and state governments remain caught in internal, narrow issues, how will this be possible?” she questioned.
Highlighting her party’s commitment to the Constitution and inclusive development, the BSP chief added, “Our party has always followed the humanitarian spirit of the Constitution, working for ‘Sarvajan Hitaya, Sarvajan Sukhaya’ (for the welfare and happiness of all).”
Calling for an end to the continuous political clashes and mistrust between the Centre and states, she claimed that such conflicts are harmful to national unity and public welfare.
