Assam is all set to become the latest NDA-ruled state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), with the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government preparing to introduce the legislation in the House on May 26.
The legislation will be introduced during the upcoming session of the Assam Legislative Assembly beginning on May 21.
Addressing mediapersons after his first Cabinet meeting in Guwahati, CM Sarma clarified that tribal communities of the state will be kept outside the ambit of the proposed legislation.
“The Assembly session will commence from May 21 and the UCC Bill will be introduced on May 26. Tribal people will be exempted from the ambit of the proposed law,” the Chief Minister said.
He asserted that the election manifesto of the BJP will be the basis of his government’s policy decisions.
“The BJP’s Sankalp Patra will be the basis of the government’s policy decisions and implementation road map,” he told reporters.
Earlier today, CM Sarma held a meeting of his Cabinet, marking the first sitting of his second term after swearing in as Chief Minister earlier this week.
The meeting was attended by four Cabinet ministers – Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Ajanta Neog and Charan Bodo.
The Cabinet discussed key governance priorities, legislative agendas and development initiatives to be undertaken during the new term of the BJP-led NDA government in Assam.
When implemented, Assam would become one of the few BJP-led states to have introduced the UCC after Uttarakhand.
The state government will, however, ensure constitutional safeguards and customary practices of tribal communities are protected.
