Bollywood actress Ruchi Gujjar made a statement at the 79th Cannes Film Festival by raising her voice against the Ghunghat Pratha, a practice still common in several parts of rural India. She chose the world’s most-watched film festival as her platform to speak on the issue.

Ruchi, who hails from Rajasthan, walked the red carpet in a traditional Rajasthani-inspired outfit complete with a dramatic ghunghat veil. The look included intricate embroidery, heavy jewellery, and other cultural Rajasthani elements.

She directly appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take strong action to end the forced practice. She urged that steps be taken to create awareness against it as part of promoting women’s freedom and equality.

In her own words, she said: “Ghunghat should never become a woman’s identity. Women deserve equal freedom, respect, and opportunities in society. I believe Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji has always taken bold decisions for the country, and I hope steps will also be taken to create awareness against forced Ghunghat Pratha.”

She also called for stronger conversations around women’s rights in rural India. She urged society to distinguish between voluntary cultural expression and forced social control.

Ruchi also carried the BJP’s symbolic lotus flower, the Kamal, during her appearance. According to her, the lotus represents her belief that strong leadership and social awareness are needed to bring change in society.
