Idris Elba officially became Sir Idris Elba on Tuesday, June 2, as King Charles III knighted the actor, activist and musician in an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle. The monarch tapped a sword on Elba’s shoulders as he knelt before him, with a photo of the moment shared on the royal family’s official Instagram page.

Elba, 53, was joined by his wife Sabrina at the castle. He shared a simple message afterward: “We are thankful. The work continues.”

How it was announced

Elba was named in the New Year 2026 honours list, published on December 29, 2025. In the Knights Bachelor section, his full name was listed as “Idrissa Akuna Elba OBE.”

He was awarded the knighthood for services to young people, given his work bringing attention to knife crime among young people in Britain. The investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle was the formal final step that made it official.

He almost missed the offer

The path to the knighthood was not without a slip-up. Elba revealed on The Graham Norton Show that he nearly missed the King’s letter about whether he would accept the honour. “It’s a bit embarrassing. I was sent a consideration letter asking whether I would or wouldn’t accept it, but I didn’t see it as it got lost in a pile of post,” he said. “My agent told me that if I didn’t accept it would pass me by.”

Why he was honoured

Elba has been a vocal advocate for youth and called on the British government to better address youth violence, including banning serrated knives and machetes to reduce knife crimes.

In 2022, he founded the Elba Hope Foundation, which invests in solutions focused on empowerment through education, economic opportunity, and entrepreneurship.

According to the Foundation’s website, the Elbas have helped raise over $1.75 billion to fight rural poverty, $2 million for the COVID-19 Rural Poor Stimulus Fund, and $6 million for debt relief in Somalia.

Elba is also a Goodwill Ambassador for The King’s Trust and has credited a grant he received from the organisation as a teen for helping launch his career in the arts.

His words on the honour

“I receive this honour on behalf of the many young people whose talent, ambition and resilience has driven the work of the Elba Hope Foundation,” Elba said in a statement.

“I hope we can do more to draw attention to the importance of sustained, practical support for young people and to the responsibility we all share to help them find an alternative to violence,” he added.

When asked at the Hijack Season 2 premiere if people should now call him “Sir,” Elba laughed and said: “I know people are saying, ‘Should I call you sir now? Should I curtsy?’ Same old Idris. Simple.”

The Priyanka Chopra connection

Elba is no stranger to working with Bollywood’s biggest global star. He starred alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the Amazon Prime Video action comedy ‘Heads of State’. Elba played UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke, John Cena played US President Will Derringer, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas played MI6 agent Noel Bisset.

At the New York premiere of the film, Priyanka opened up about the strong bond between Elba and Cena on set. “They had such a bromance,” she said.

In an ironic twist, Elba has now played both the US president and a British prime minister on screen, in the films ‘House of Dynamite’ and ‘Heads of State’, respectively.

Career and earlier honours

Elba became an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2016. The knighthood is a step above that. He is widely known for his roles in ‘The Wire’, ‘Luther’, and ‘Beast’, among many others.

Elba has also revealed plans to retire from acting and focus on directing.

Others honoured alongside Elba

Other names in King Charles’ New Year Honours List for 2026 included Cynthia Erivo and Ellie Goulding. Erivo called it “an honour I could never have thought would happen.” Goulding was appointed a Member of the British Empire for her work as an environmental ambassador. Actor Warwick Davis received an OBE. “This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I’ve been in Star Wars,” Davis said.

The ethnic minority representation in the 2026 New Year’s honours list doubled from 7% the previous year to 14%.
