A 21-year-old woman died and another sustained serious injuries after reportedly falling from the rooftop of a building in Delhi’s Hauz Qazi area on Tuesday night.
The deceased, Sunita, who was a close friend and neighbour of 19-year-old Tripti, was taking a walk on the terrace when the tragedy occurred.
According to the police, a distress call was received at the Hauz Qazi police station at 8:41 pm on Tuesday. “The caller reported that a boy and a girl had jumped from the top floor of a building in the Hakim Bakka area near Hauz Qazi Chowk,” they added.
When the police arrived at the scene, they found a woman lying motionless in a narrow lane.
“The young woman had suffered severe head injuries, including extensive skull damage, and was immediately declared dead,” an officer said.
Tripti, a resident of the same area, had already been taken to the hospital by her family before the police arrived. She is currently unconscious and receiving treatment. Doctors have confirmed that she is not yet in a condition to provide a statement.
A preliminary inquiry revealed that Sunita and Tripti were neighbours and close friends. According to their routine, the duo would take a walk together on the terrace of their adjoining houses every evening.
Tripti’s brother said he had seen both the girls shortly before the incident and had advised his sister to come downstairs since it was getting late.
The two seemed to be in a normal mood and showed no signs of distress. Minutes later, a loud thud was heard, and both were found lying on the ground.
Sunita had married in February 2025 and was currently living with her parents while undergoing treatment for paralysis, the police said.
A case has been reported to the SDM Karol Bagh under Section 196 of the BNSS for further action. The police stated that no foul play is suspected at this time, and the incident is being treated as a fall from height.
The investigation is ongoing, and statements will be recorded once the injured girl regains consciousness.
