Day after West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari issued a stern warning to Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir at the assembly, police went knocking at the Rejinagar MLA’s residence and summoned him to the police station.
The summons on July 3 and July 5 is in connection with two separate cases filed over his recent inflammatory remarks.
Meanwhile, Kabir has claimed that he was not at home when police personnel visited his place and is not aware about the notices issued to him. The MLA who is known for commanding significant support among the minority community in Murshidabad said that he would decide whether he would visit the police station after receiving the notices reportedly served at his place.
Earlier on Friday, speaking at a public meeting in Rejinagar, Kabir had said, “I told Suvendu Adhikari, it is good that you have won and the BJP has won. But your party should not boast too much in Murshidabad.”
“If they cross their limits, they will be in trouble. Lakhs will hit the streets, and I will lead them. We will beat them up. There will be no one left to hold the BJP flag,” he added.
In a similar threatening tone, Kabir had warned at another meeting in Shaktipur saying, “The Officer-in-Charge (OC) arrested my nephew the day before the election. I will deal with him first, and then his father. I will surround the police station with 10,000 people and get him out. Stop me if you can.”
In response to such threats, Adhikari warned him at the assembly saying, “The dangerous game is being played to polarise the nearly 72 per cent Muslim voters in that region.” Recalling the fate of several influential strongmen who allegedly defied the law in the past, Adhikari warned Kabir saying that the latter should think “25 times before speaking”.
