The Delhi government has approved a mega-project to create a biodiversity park-cum-wetland in north Delhi. The park will have 25 million litres of natural sewage treatment facility and a water body to retain 50 million litres of clean water.

The 60 crore mega project under Delhi Jal Board is expected to be completed in a span of two years. The 40-acre project will be situated at Timarpur and will be completed in two different phases. In the first phase a plan will be prepared on the natural way to conduct research on water.

The area will receive sewage water from Nehru Vihar and its surrounding areas which will be further processed into clean water. A detailed DPR (detailed project report) on the complete process has been created by DJB. The project got its approval at the DJB board meeting in September.

In the second phase of preparation, the 40 acre area will be created as a tourist spot which will include a boating facility, an amphitheatre, herbal garden, food park and butterfly park, said a senior DJB official.

Forty years back, the DJB had a natural sewage plant at the same location which treated approximately 6 million gallons of water per day. The treatment plant is not in working condition but sewage water of Mukherjee Nagar, Nehru Vihar and adjoining areas still comes here. Under the project, this sewage water will be treated. For this, they will create a water body around which special plants will be planted and special types of rocks will also be placed in the area near the water body. The treated water will be used for gardening and other such purposes.
