Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for granting permission for the use of green firecrackers in the city on Diwali following the state government’s special request.
She said it also reflects a balanced approach towards environmental protection.
Following the conditional approval by the top court, the CM appealed to the citizens of the National Capital to use the green crackers with responsibility and restraint, adhering to the guidelines by the court. She assured the Delhi government’s commitment to the vision of a clean and green Delhi, while respecting the sentiments of the people.
Taking to social media platform X, Gupta stated that the government’s goal is to ensure that the festivities are carried out with zeal while ensuring that environmental safety is not compromised.
She urged the public to come together and strike a harmony between celebrations and environmental protection with green crackers.
Speaking on the development, Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma said he wholeheartedly congratulates every citizen of Delhi-NCR for the Diwali gift from the Delhi government while thanking the Supreme Court for granting permission for the use of green crackers this Diwali.
The government moved the Supreme Court for the permission for use of green crackers so that the people could celebrate their festival of lights with joy and responsibility, he said, adding that today’s decision restored dignity and showed that Delhiites can celebrate responsibly while caring for the environment.
The apex court on Wednesday allowed the use of green firecrackers for the upcoming Diwali festival. However, the permission is subject to certain restrictions with regard to the days and timings of use and their sale.
The court has permitted the sale of certified green firecrackers between October 18 and 20, specifying that their bursting will only be allowed between 6 am and 7 am, and 8 pm and 10 pm, on Diwali eve and Diwali day.
Only the NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute)-authorized sellers will be allowed to sell the certified green firecrackers that form the designated sale spots as defined and authorised by the district administration.
