US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says deal with Iran on ending war likely in next couple of days

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday said that progress has been made in the ongoing peace negotiations with Iran and a deal could be signed in the next couple of days.

“There’s been some progress made…Even as I speak to you now, there’s some work being done…This issue needs to be solved, as the President said one way or the other,” Rubio, who is currently on a four-day visit to India, told reporters in New Delhi.

Hoping that good news is around the corner, Secretary Rubio said, “There is a chance that, whether it’s later today, tomorrow, or in a couple of days, we may have something to say.”

He, however, asserted that the US will never allow Iran to have nuclear weapons and ensure the Strait of Hormuz is reopened without any toll.

“Iran can never have nuclear weapons. The straits need to be opened without tolls. They need to turn over their enriched uranium, they need to turn over the highly enriched uranium,” he said.

He reiterated that US President Donald Trump has consistently made it clear that the issue of uranium enrichment by Iran needs to be addressed to resolve the conflict.

“If we need to address that issue, we need to address the issue of enrichment. These are the President’s points consistently. His preference is always to deal with it in a diplomatic way,” Rubio stated.

He further said that the US is prioritising diplomacy to end the West Asia conflict.

“That’s what we’re working on right now…We hope it’s done through the diplomatic route. That’s what we’re working on…,” he added.
