The situation in Nepal turned grim on Monday as thousands of young protesters, largely from the Gen Z demographic, took to the streets of Kathmandu to demonstrate against the social media ban and widespread government corruption.
According to media reports, the ban acted as a catalyst, but the underlying anger stems from years of misgovernance and corruption.
Videos circulating on social media showed protesters breaking police barricades and hurling stones at security personnel.
The situation escalated when police resorted to tear gas and water cannons to control the crowd, but the measures failed to contain the unrest. Security forces ultimately opened fire, resulting in the deaths of 19 people on Monday.
