Amid US President Donald Trump’s renewed push to acquire Greenland, several European countries have reportedly deployed troops to the Arctic Island as part of what is being described as a “reconnaissance mission.”

According to reports, countries, including France, Germany, the UK, Norway, and Sweden, among others, have sent troops to Greenland, with Denmark also announcing an increase in military presence.

Experts believe the limited troop deployment is intended to send a clear signal to Washington that NATO maintains a presence in Greenland and that the security of the autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark remains a key priority for European nations.

The development follows a meeting between the foreign ministers of Greenland and Denmark, Vivian Motzfeldt and Lars Løkke Rasmussen, and US Vice President JD Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House.

After the meeting, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that Greenland’s security and defence was a “common concern” for the entire NATO amid Trump’s threat to acquire the resource-rich island by force.

Briefing the public on the meeting, the Danish PM said that it was not an easy meeting, as it did not change the fact that the US remains ambitious about Greenland’s takeover.

“That does not change the fact that there is a fundamental disagreement because the American ambition to take over Greenland is intact,” she said, adding, “This is obviously serious, and therefore we continue our efforts to prevent that scenario from becoming a reality.”

After the US operation in Venezuela, Trump had expressed his desire to acquire Greenland, saying the US needs the Danish territory for security reasons. While Denmark and several other European countries denounced his remarks, he has remained adamant, with some reports claiming that he is even ready to use force.

On Wednesday, Trump reiterated that the United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. He further stated, “It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!”
