US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 100% tariff on Canada immediately if it makes a deal with China. The United States will levy 100% tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the country, if Canada will take forward its partnership with China.
Trump has hit out at Canada for refusing his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence project being built over Greenland, which he claims would protect Canada. Trump posted on a social media platform, warning Canada that Beijing could “eat them up” within a year.
“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a “Drop Off Port” for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life,” said Trump.
Trump lashed out at Canada as the northern neighbour voted in favour of doing business with China, over US-backed security. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had announced a new trade agreement with China on 17 January, saying the deal would open markets for Canadian businesses and workers. He wrote on X, “We’ve secured a new trade agreement with China, unlocking more than $7 billion in export markets for Canadian workers and businesses.”
The statement has come just after the recent exchange of targeted remarks between the US President and Canadian Prime Minister at the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos in Switzerland.
Earlier this week, Trump had targeted Canada for being ungrateful to the United States for all the “freebies” it receives, including security protections from the US. He claimed that Canada exists because of the United States, and Carney should remember that next time he speaks.
“Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way. They should also be grateful, but they’re not. I saw your Prime Minister yesterday; he wasn’t so grateful. They should be grateful to us,” Trump said during his address at the 56th Annual Summit of the WEF in Davos.
