Days after his letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store linking his renewed Greenland takeover push to Nobel Peace Prize snub, President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that he doesn’t care about the award.

“I don’t care about the Nobel Prize. First of all, a very fine woman felt that I deserved it and really wanted me to have the Nobel Prize, and I appreciate that. If anybody thinks that Norway doesn’t control the Nobel Prize, they are just kidding,” Trump told reporters when asked about his letter to PM Store.

The US President further asserted that all he cared about was saving lives. “And I saved… tens of millions of lives,” he claimed.

Trump was contacted by Store and Finnish President Alexander Stubb to oppose his plan to impose tariffs on eight European nations over the Greenland issue.

In response, the US President sent a letter to the Norwegian PM and told him that he no longer feels any obligation to peace after Norway failed to consider him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

“Considering your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America,” he told Store.

He also questioned Denmark’s “right to ownership” of Greenland, saying, “There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also.”

The US President claimed that he has done more for NATO than anyone else since its founding and that it’s time for the military alliance of western countries to do something for the United States.

What Norwegian PM said on Trump’s remarks

In response, the Norwegian PM reiterated that the Nobel Prizes are decided by an independent committee and that the government of Norway does not have any say in that.

He also confirmed receiving the message from Trump. “I can confirm that this is a text message that I received yesterday afternoon from President Trump. It came in response to a short text message from me sent earlier the same day, on behalf of myself and the President of Finland.”

He reiterated, “I have clearly explained, including to President Trump, what is well known, the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee, and not the Norwegian Government.”
