The festival of Ningol Chakkouba, symbolising the deep bond between brothers and sisters, was celebrated across Manipur today with great enthusiasm.
The traditional feast, where married women (Ningols) are invited by their parents and brothers for a grand meal and exchange of gifts, brought moments of joy and togetherness amid the prevailing challenges in the state.
This year’s celebration took on special meaning as several civil society organisations, local clubs, and women’s groups organised community Ningol Chakkouba feasts for all communities, including internally displaced persons (IDPs) staying in various relief camps.
The events were aimed at spreading harmony and reaffirming the message of unity and brotherhood among different communities of Manipur.
Fish, the main delicacy of the day, dominated the festive menu, with local markets in Imphal and other districts witnessing brisk sales since early morning. Despite high prices, families and volunteers ensured that traditional dishes were served in abundance, reflecting the enduring spirit of the festival.
At several venues, brothers and sisters reunited, sharing meals and memories. In relief camps too, the celebration was filled with emotional moments as many Ningols, separated from their homes due to the ongoing unrest, were able to observe the day in a collective atmosphere of warmth and care.
Community leaders, organisers, and volunteers emphasised that this year’s Ningol Chakkouba was not merely a festival but a gesture of solidarity, compassion.
