Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, successfully organised the 13th edition of its cultural discussion series, “Kala Samvad – 13,” at Rathindra Mancha, Jorasanko, Kolkata. The programme was organisedin collaboration with the West Bengal State Akademi of Dance, Drama, Music & Visual Arts and Rabindra Bharati University.
The event began with a beautiful Ganesh Vandana presented by the students of the Vocal Department of Rabindra Bharati University. This was followed by a performance of Natyashastra Abhinaya by the students of the university’s Dance Department. The main attraction of the programme was a panel discussion on the theme “Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra: Cultural Treasure of Humanity.” The session was chaired by Dr. Sandhya Purecha, Chairperson of Sangeet Natak Akademi.
She explained that Angika Abhinaya is not only important in Indian classical performing arts but also has value in sociology and science. She said that body movements, facial expressions, hand gestures, and postures help us understand human behaviour, emotions, communication, and social interaction. She also highlighted the scientific connection between the body, mind, and expression. The panel featured Swami Buddhidananda, Tanmay Kumar Bhattacharya, Arpita Venkatesh, and Dr. Haimanti Chattopadhyay, Secretary of the West Bengal State Akademi of Dance, Drama, Music & Visual Arts.
Each speaker offered valuable insights into the spiritual, cultural, and artistic significance of the Bhagavad Gita and the Natyashastra. They highlighted how these timeless texts continue to inspire ethical values, creativity, and cultural identity while remaining relevant in contemporary society. Their discussions demonstrated how ancient Indian knowledge systems still provide meaningful guidance in modern life and artistic practice. The programme witnessed the enthusiastic participation of artists, academicians, researchers, students, and cultural enthusiasts from various disciplines.
