Ryan ten Doeschate has stepped down as India’s assistant coach following the conclusion of the team’s white-ball tour of England and is expected to return to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coaching set-up, according to an ESPNcricinfo report.
The former Netherlands captain is understood to have informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his decision while the squad was still in the United Kingdom after India lost both the T20I and ODI series against England.
His departure comes at the end of his initial two-year contract with the BCCI, which reportedly ran from around July 2024 to mid-July 2026.

Ten Doeschate joined the Indian support staff after Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach following India’s triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. Considered one of Gambhir’s trusted aides, he worked closely with the batting and fielding groups during his tenure.
During his time with the national team, India lifted the 2025 Asia Cup and successfully defended the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026.
The Test team, however, endured a difficult transition, surrendering the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia before suffering home series defeats to New Zealand (3-0) and South Africa (2-0).
A return to KKR would reunite ten Doeschate with a franchise where he has enjoyed success both as a player and a coach.
He was part of Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL title-winning squads in 2012 and 2014 before returning as fielding coach in 2022. He remained with the coaching set-up until joining the Indian team in 2024, helping KKR win another IPL title under head coach Chandrakant Pandit and mentor Gautam Gambhir.
His expected return will also see him reunite with Abhishek Nayar, with whom he previously worked during their time at KKR and, briefly, in India’s coaching set-up under Gambhir.
