Star boxer Vijender Singh has been appointed as a member of the Asian Boxing Council, marking another significant step in his journey from an elite athlete to a global sports administrator.
India’s first Olympic boxing medallist, Vijender brings close to two decades of experience at the highest level of the sport, spanning both amateur and professional boxing. His induction into the Asian Boxing Council underlines his deep understanding of boxing and his continued commitment to nurturing its growth across the continent.
Reacting to the appointment, Vijender said, “I am honoured to be appointed as a member of the Asian Boxing Council. I would like to thank the Boxing Federation of India and its leadership for entrusting me with this responsibility.”
“I hope to fulfil this role to the best of my ability at the international level. Just as we created history in Beijing, I am committed to working for the growth of Asian boxing, with a strong focus on Indian boxers, and helping our athletes achieve even greater success in the future. I am hopeful that our boxers will continue to perform well on the international stage,” he added.
The Asian Boxing Council plays a key role in shaping competition structures and development pathways across the region. Vijender’s presence is expected to bring an athlete-centric perspective to decision-making, governance, and long-term planning.
A trailblazer for Indian boxing, Vijender remains one of the country’s most recognisable sporting figures. He made history by winning a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and went on to claim multiple medals at the Commonwealth and Asian Games. He later transitioned seamlessly into professional boxing, further enhancing his global profile.
In July last year, driven by a desire to give back to the sport, he also served as a mentor to the Indian boxing team at the World Championships held in Liverpool, UK, in September.
