In a recent session of the Rajya Sabha on December 18, 2025, Congress MP Jose K Mani, questioned the Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya regarding the current status of Indian football, following Curacao, a small Caribbean nation’s qualification for the upcoming FIFA World Cup – a feat that highlights India’s ongoing struggles in the sport.

While Curacao, a nation with a population of only about 158,000 people and an area of 450 km square, has secured a spot in next year’s FIFA World Cup through CONCACAF, India still trails behind despite its vast population and resources.

In addition to highlighting the state of Indian football, Mani further asked what plans Mandaviya has to develop football as a sport in India.

In answer to the questions raised by Mani, Mandaviya responded that qualification criteria for the World Cup are set by FIFA and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is the national body primarily responsible for the development of the sport, including India’s participation in the World Cup. He even added that the AIFF has long-term plans in place to advance both men’s and women’s football and strive for qualifying in the World Cup.

Emphasizing these long-term plans, the Minister also pointed out ongoing efforts to strengthen grassroot and youth football, highlighting the role of initiatives like FIFA-AIFF academies that are designed to support and help young talent with professional training as well as the Khelo India football leagues that are giving opportunities to players to experience competitive play.

As the recent GOAT Tour of Messi in India generated massive enthusiasm, it showcased the love Indians have for football and the passion for the sport that resides across the country. With proper investment, guidance and planning, India can harness this potential to nurture talent and reach new heights in international football.
