In this absolutely fast world, many people find it hard to sleep. Stress, late-night work, endless scrolling on the phone, heavy dinners, and irregular schedules disturb our natural rhythm. As a result, we wake up tired, cranky, and low on energy.

If we look back at ancient Indian wisdom, we see that sleep was considered sacred. Ayurveda calls sleep “Nidra”. It is one of the three pillars of health along with food and balanced living.

The sages of India gave great deal of importance to sound sleep. They believed that good rest not only refreshes the body but also helps you heal the mind and sharpens the spirit.

And today, modern science agrees. Doctors say sleep is as important as exercise and nutrition. Poor sleep weakens immunity. It also increases stress hormones, and even harms the heart. The good news is that we don’t always need pills or gadgets to fix our sleep.

Ayurveda teaches that our body loves rhythm. If we go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, our natural clock works better. Try to set a fixed bedtime, ideally between nine-thirty and ten-thirty at night.

An hour before bed, reduce screen time. Instead of TV or phone, spend time reading, meditating, or listening to soft music. This helps your mind shift from “day mode” to “night mode.”

You can also dim the lights in your room. Darkness tells the body to release melatonin, the sleep hormone. A quiet, dark, and cool bedroom is the first step to better sleep.

Herbal teas are a gentle way to calm the mind before sleep. Ayurveda recommends herbs that soothe the nerves, cool down excess heat in the body, and balance restless energy.

Patanjali has many relaxing teas. These include tulsi, chamomile, and ashwagandha. Another classic option is golden milk. This is made with warm milk, turmeric, and a pinch of nutmeg.

Ashwagandha or brahmi drinks also drastically reduce stress and promote deeper sleep. Drinking something warm at night sends a signal to your body to slow down. Make it a ritual.

One of the most effective Ayurvedic remedies for better sleep is abhyanga. It is the gentle self-massage with warm oil. This helps you relax tired muscles. Eventually, it improves blood flow, and calms the nervous system.

Before bed, warm some oil and massage your feet, temples, and scalp. Patanjali almond oil is especially good for calming nerves, while coconut or sesame oil brings a grounding effect.

Foot massage is particularly powerful because the soles of the feet have many nerve endings. Massaging them with oil draws energy downward. It then settles restless thoughts, and prepares the body for rest.

Sometimes the body is ready for rest but it’s the mind that keeps running. In that case, light yoga stretches and breathing exercises are wonderful tools to prepare your the mind for sleep.

Simple postures like child’s pose or lying with the legs up against the wall help release tension. This also helps improve circulation.

Breathing practices such as alternate nostril breathing or the bee breath are calming. They help slow down the heart rate. Even ten minutes of gentle yoga and pranayama can make the transition from wakefulness to sleep much smoother.
