Post-Diwali Detox: The aftermath of Diwali is not just the disappearing of the glitter but also a kind of glow, different from the one we see, that fills the air with the lingering smoke of firecrackers and pollution. Though the festival of lights is a delightful and beautiful event, it often results in heavy air, disturbed sleep patterns, overeating, and fatigue. If your skin seems lacklustre, your digestion weak, and your breath is heavier than usual, then it is definitely your body sending a message that a detox is due.
What better system than Ayurveda to bring back the lost balance, vigour, and purity following a merry-making spree? Just a few thoughtful changes in your lifestyle guided by the time-tested wisdom of Ayurveda and Patanjali well-known natural remedies can facilitate the detoxification of your body and refresh your mind.
Start your day with the right morning routine
Detox first and foremost implies a delicate awakening of your sleeping body in the early morning hours. Lemon and honey diluted in a glass of warm water is an excellent way to greet the day. Such a small act drives out toxins, improves digestion, and metabolism is set on a higher pace.
Immunity can be effectively fortified by a cup of Tulsi-Giloy tea. While Tulsi is a good friend of the respiratory tract as it makes the airways free of any kind of block, Giloy purifies the blood and lends vigour to the body. Patanjali’s Giloy Juice and Aloe Vera Juice taken with warm water on an empty stomach are great detox agents too as they neutralise the liver, ease digestion, and impart a radiant glow to the skin.
Consume only light
After the heavy indulgences that are typical of festive days and nights, giving a rest to the digestive system is of utmost importance. Being an ancient system of health, Ayurveda strongly advocates the consumption of a sattvik diet, which is not only pure but also light and nourishing, thus being quite digestible and promoting internal cleansing.
Nothing could be better than freshly made moong dal khichdi with turmeric, cumin, and a spoonful of ghee to bring back the health of your stomach. It provides relief to the stomach, balances the doshas, and supports detoxification. Green vegetables like spinach, bottle gourd, and ridge gourd, apart from their other benefits, are also good sources of water and necessary minerals.
During this period, stay away from processed foods, deep-fried items, and refined sugar. Instead, consume detoxifying spices like ginger, turmeric, cumin, coriander, and fennel in your foods. Taking Patanjali’s Divya Triphala Churna or Triphala Juice before going to bed can be very helpful in gently cleansing the colon and bringing back the digestive balance.
Calm down, breathe deeply, and keep moving
The smoke coming from fireworks and the smog contribute to making not only the lungs but also the sinuses work harder than usual. Ayurveda suggests that to purify the respiratory system and thus to have a stronger immunity one should do some pranayama and light exercise.
Why not use Anulom Vilom and Bhastrika Pranayama to start your day? They are certain breathing exercises that do a lot for the person practising them. They force the respiratory tracts to be emptied, oxygen intake is increased, and mental clearness is markedly improved. Congestion can be eased by taking steam baths with a few drops of either eucalyptus or camphor oil.
Even a walk of 20 minutes early in the morning through a park full of trees will greatly assist the body in its fight against the effects of pollution. It is best to use this along with gentle yoga postures, such as twists, downward dog, and cobra pose, which not only help to improve blood flow but also to eliminate toxins through the sweat. Movement is medicine. It keeps energy flowing and prevents stagnation.
Water is your best friend
Hydration is very important if one is looking to rid the body of its toxins. Warm water should be drunk freely throughout the day and caffeinated drinks are to be replaced with teas made from cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds. These herbs facilitate digestion and make the body release the heat and toxins it is carrying.
As good as water and tea, rest, too, is very important. Do not forget to ensure seven to eight hours of good and deep sleep every night. Sleep is the time when the body heals its tissues, balances hormones, and rejuvenates the energy levels.
This post-Diwali detox is much more than a mere cleansing ritual. It is a renewal; a way to thank your body, renew your spirit, and enter the coming season with freshness, vigour, and grace.
