Diwali is around the corner. While the main festival is observed on the Kartik Amavasya, Diwali sees two important days in the run-up to it. The festival actually runs for five days, preceded and followed by days that have their own significance according to Hindu culture. This year Diwali is on October 27 but the extravaganza will commence from the day of Dhanteras which is falling on Friday, October 25. It is very significant to do Dhanteras Puja during the Shubh Muhurat.

This year, Dhanteras Puja Muhurat will start from 7:08 PM to 8:15 PM. The total duration of the shubh muhurat will be of 1 hour and seven minutes.

On this day, it is considered auspicious to buy gold, silver, electronic items, utensils, broom. It is believed that new ‘Dhan’ or some form of precious metal is a sign of good luck – be it gold, silver, brass, copper, brass or bronze. Stay away from buying anything that has traces of iron or steel. Although aluminum is considered auspicious.

As per the Hindu holy scriptures, during the cosmic battle, gods and demons both churned the Kshira ocean to gain the divine nectar of immortality. God Dhanvantri (God of medicine) emerged out of the water with the pot of elixir in his hands. Thus, this day has been named as Dhanteras because of the physician of God – Dhanvantri.
