Actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay has called off his scheduled campaign rally in Cuddalore on Saturday, citing safety concerns, in a late development that comes amid an intense election push across Tamil Nadu.
The cancelled event was part of a full-day campaign tour in the district and had already faced one postponement earlier this week, underlining the disruptions to Vijay’s outreach at a crucial juncture.
With political parties stepping up efforts ahead of the Assembly elections, leaders have been travelling extensively to mobilise support. Vijay, contesting his maiden election as head of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has been on a rapid tour across districts, drawing sizeable crowds at multiple stops.
Whirlwind campaign sees strong turnout across districts
Vijay’s campaign trail began in Perambur in Chennai and has since covered Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi, followed by outreach in Karaikudi. His rallies have seen significant turnout, signalling growing interest in his political debut.
As part of an aggressive statewide push, he has been canvassing votes for TVK’s ‘whistle’ symbol, with multiple stops planned in quick succession.
Permissions granted, but rally withdrawn at the last minute
Party sources said permission was initially sought for events at four locations in Cuddalore district – Cuddalore, Vadalur, Sethiyathope and Tittakudi. While police approvals came with conditions, the campaign was first put on hold and later rescheduled for Saturday.
Authorities subsequently cleared the revised plan with 21 conditions. The programme was to begin at 2 PM in Cuddalore and continue through the other locations, ending by 9 PM.
However, the rally has now been cancelled altogether.
Vehicle incidents cited behind safety concerns
Sources indicated that the decision was taken after a series of minor vehicle-related incidents during Vijay’s recent tours in the southern districts.
Given that Cuddalore is about 175 km from Chennai, the campaign team reportedly assessed that the long road travel could pose additional risks, leading to the last-minute withdrawal.
Political reactions split over the decision
The move has sparked a divided response. The sudden cancellation hasn’t gone down well with everyone. Some in political circles feel the last-minute change raises questions about how well the campaign is being planned.
But Vijay’s supporters are backing him, saying safety has to come first, especially in a campaign that’s moving this fast and covering long distances.
With the election race heating up, every move Vijay makes will be watched closely as he tries to carve out space for himself in Tamil Nadu’s crowded political field.
