Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan to succeed Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi as India’s next Navy chief

The government has appointed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of the Naval Staff. Vice Admiral Swaminathan, currently serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, will take over after Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi demits office on May 31. The announcement was made by the Defence Ministry through an official statement issued by PIB.

A specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare, Vice Admiral Swaminathan has spent nearly four decades in the Indian Navy and has handled several frontline operational and strategic assignments across commands, personnel management, training and maritime security.

The officer had assumed charge as the 34th Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command on July 31, 2025. Before that, he served as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff at Naval Headquarters.

From INS Vikramaditya to Western Fleet: Krishna Swaminathan’s naval journey

Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, Vice Admiral Swaminathan has commanded several prominent warships during his career, including missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.

The Navy officer has also headed the Western Fleet, often referred to as the Navy’s “Sword Arm”, and later served as Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and Advisor, Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India.

On elevation to the rank of Rear Admiral, he was appointed Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, where he oversaw naval training operations. He also played a key role in setting up the Indian Naval Safety Team responsible for operational safety oversight across the force.

Subsequently, he served as Flag Officer Sea Training before taking charge of the Western Fleet.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan is a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.

His academic background includes training at the National Defence Academy, the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom, the College of Naval Warfare in Karanja and the United States Naval War College in Rhode Island.

He holds a BSc degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, an MSc in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, an MA in Defence Studies from King’s College London, an MPhil in Strategic Studies from Mumbai University and a PhD in International Studies from Mumbai University.

The government announcement comes at a time when the Indian Navy continues to sharpen its focus on maritime security, operational preparedness and strategic presence in the Indian Ocean Region.
