The issue of potential misuse of Artificial Intelligence figured in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Thursday. Raising the issue under Rule 300 during the discussion in Zero Hour, Samajwadi Party member Atul Pradhan demanded that the government take strict action on the complaints.
Pradhan said that AI could prove to be a dangerous technology, potentially subject to misuse. Sharing his experience, he said that some people from an agency came to him and claimed that they could deliver his speech to the public by imitating his voice and face without his presence.
He said that while his voice and face can be broadcast in a positive context, they can also be misused. He complained to the SSP of his district, but no concrete action has been taken so far.
Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana described the issue as serious, stating that AI could have a greater impact, particularly on those involved in the political field. He urged Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna to address the issue and expressed the need for strict action on complaints.
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister stated that the central government has enacted a law regarding AI. He stated that further action will be taken after discussing the matter with legal experts. Earlier, State IT Minister Sunil Sharma presented the government’s position in the House.
This discussion in the House underscored the need for serious discussion on the misuse of emerging technologies like AI and the legal implications associated with it.
