Uttar Pradesh is making rapid progress towards eliminating tuberculosis, emerging as one of India’s strongest performers in the national TB-free campaign, according to the Global TB Report 2025 released by the World Health Organization on November 12.
India has recorded a 21% decline in TB incidence and a 28% drop in TB-related deaths since 2015, with 92% treatment completion — one of the highest rates globally. Uttar Pradesh’s contribution has been especially significant, driven by strong leadership, technology-driven interventions, and extensive community participation, the WHO report said.
Between January 1 and October 30, 2025, Uttar Pradesh registered 5,61,145 TB patients on the Ni-Kshay portal against a target of 6.62 lakh notifications. In 2024, the state identified 6,81,731 TB patients, the highest in the country.
State TB Officer Dr. Shailendra Bhatnagar said UP’s progress has been remarkable, particularly due to a sharp rise in private-sector notifications, which increased from 63% in 2021 to 115% in 2024. In 2023, the state was honoured for having the highest private-sector TB notifications.
Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan expanded from 15 districts to all 75 districts in January 2025, with the Chief Minister regularly conducting review meetings with district and divisional authorities to strengthen implementation. Of the registrations made in 2025 so far, 3,65,171 patients came from the government sector and 1,95,974 from the private sector.
The Nikshay Mitra initiative continues to be pivotal in providing nutritional support to patients. From November 2022 to November 3, 2025, more than 88,000 Nikshay Mitras distributed 8.81 lakh nutrition kits to 6.25 lakh TB patients.
Major contributors include ITC in Saharanpur with 18,016 beneficiaries, HCL Foundation in Hardoi with 13,849, Mudona Rural Development Foundation in Mathura with 7,712, and J.K. Cement in Aligarh with 6,668 beneficiaries. Through the DBT Nutrition Scheme, 31.44 lakh patients have received ₹1,021.86 crore since 2018.
In 2025 alone, from January to September, 2.99 lakh patients received nutrition support worth ₹141.72 crore.
Between December 7, 2024, and October 19, 2025, the state screened 2.38 crore high-risk individuals, notified 5.14 lakh patients, conducted 65 lakh X-rays, and carried out 20.90 lakh NAAT tests. During this period, 2 lakh beneficiaries received nutrition kits under the Nikshay Nutrition Scheme, 3.42 lakh patients received at least one nutrition pouch, 1.69 lakh underwent differentiated TB care assessment, and 4.25 lakh household contacts received TB preventive treatment.
In 2024, 7,191 gram panchayats in the state were declared TB-free. On World TB Day in March 2025, Uttar Pradesh received a certificate of appreciation from the Government of India for its outstanding performance in the 100-day TB-Free India Campaign.
