The Elections Commission of India on Sunday announced the dates for the high-stakes Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. The South Indian state will vote in a single phase on April 23, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The results are also likely to be announced on the same day. The South Indian state has 234 seats.

According to the Election Commission of India, the gazette notification for the first phase will be issued on March 30, with the last date for filing nominations on April 6, scrutiny on April 7, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature on April 9.
The counting of votes will take place on May 4 with three other states – Assam, West Bengal, and Kerala – and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar said that 17.4 crore voters will be eligible to cast their votes at 2.19 lakh polling stations across West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.
More than 25 lakh election officials will be on duty to ensure free and fair elections across the four states and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
