Climate scientist and activist Sonam Wangchuk was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur, on Saturday morning after complaining of abdominal pain and body ache.

Following complaints raised by Wangchuk late Friday night, he was taken from the Central Jail to AIIMS Jodhpur in the early hours of Saturday (around 6:30 am) under police custody.

He was examined at the Emergency Department, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department, and the Medical OPD, where a gastroenterologist and other specialist doctors conducted a detailed medical check-up. After staying at the hospital for nearly one and a half hours, Wangchuk was escorted back to the jail.

Hospital sources later confirmed that the activist was suffering from gastroenterology-related problems.

Wangchuk, a prominent crusader for Ladakh’s statehood under the Sixth Schedule and other local socio-political issues, has been lodged in jail here for over four months (since September 27, 2025) under the National Security Act (NSA), following incidents of violence during protests linked to his demands. He has reportedly been complaining of ill health and gastro-related issues for some time.

In a petition filed before the Supreme Court challenging his arrest, Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali, also highlighted concerns regarding her husband’s health.

Taking serious note of the issue, the apex court on Thursday directed that an intensive medical examination of the undertrial be conducted by specialist doctors and that a report be submitted to the court by February 2, 2026.

In compliance with the court’s order, Wangchuk was also taken to AIIMS Jodhpur on Friday for medical evaluation.
