The Special Investigation Team probing allegations of Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi’s purported links with Pakistan submitted its report to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Sarma told reporters that he would carefully study the findings before making them public.
“I will receive the report after returning to Guwahati. I will go through it in detail. Since this inquiry involves national security, the government will inform the people about the findings and the next steps only after a thorough review,” Sarma said.
Reacting sharply, Congress MP and state party president Gaurav Gogoi accused Sarma of “manufacturing lies” to divert attention from the failures of his government.
“He thinks the people of Assam are naïve enough to believe his baseless charges. But the people are wise, and they see through his propaganda,” Gogoi told the media.
He alleged that the Chief Minister was attempting to hide what he called a “corrupt regime,” claiming Sarma has misused his office to benefit his family and accumulate illicit wealth.
Gogoi further asserted that the public mood in Assam was already turning against the BJP government.
“No matter what Himanta Biswa Sarma says, there is a strong wind of change. People want a government that prioritizes health and education, creates jobs, and promotes local industries and artisans,” he added.
The controversy began a few months back when Sarma alleged that Gogoi and his family maintained suspicious links with Pakistani entities, a charge that sparked a heated political battle in Assam.
The Congress dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, while the ruling BJP projected the probe as a matter of national security.
The episode has since become a flashpoint in the state’s political discourse, with both sides trading sharp attacks ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
