From 2026, students in Jharkhand schools will study the life and struggles of “Dishom Guru” Shibu Soren as part of their syllabus. The state’s School Education and Literacy Department has decided to include chapters on the veteran leader across eight textbooks from Classes 1 to 12.

Officials said the move aims to ensure that the younger generation grows up with awareness of Jharkhand’s own icons alongside national leaders. For primary classes, Soren’s life will be presented through simple stories and anecdotes, while higher classes will engage with themes like tribal identity, social reform, parliamentary contributions, and the movement for Jharkhand’s statehood.

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) have begun work on the content. Teams of experts will adapt the material for different age groups, supported by project work and activities to make learning interactive.

Education Secretary Umashankar Singh said the initiative is designed to inspire values of honesty, struggle, and social commitment.

“Dishom Guru Shibu Soren gave Jharkhand a distinct identity. His fight, his values, and his commitment to people’s rights will inspire the next generation,” he said.

The political establishment has also weighed in. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) hailed the move as “historic,” describing it as a recognition of both the leader and the state’s identity. Party leader Mithilesh Thakur wrote on X that the decision would give children not only a textbook chapter but also a moral compass: “Guruji’s struggle and legacy will guide future generations.”

The decision has sparked wider discussion on the role of regional icons in education. While supporters see it as overdue recognition of a towering figure in Jharkhand’s history, critics are likely to question whether the step blurs the line between education and political legacy-building.

For Jharkhand’s students, however, the addition promises a closer connection with the roots of their state, its struggles, and the leaders who shaped its journey.
