The Government of India has appointed Shashi Shekhar Vempati as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, he will serve a term of three years starting from the day he officially joins the office.
The announcement was made through an official notification issued by the ministry on the same day. The government confirmed that Vempati’s role will involve overseeing the CBFC’s functioning and guiding its certification process for films across India.
This new appointment comes after Prasoon Joshi, who previously headed the CBFC, stepped down from the position. Joshi has now been elevated to serve as the Chairman of Prasar Bharati, India’s public service broadcaster.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati’s Career Background in Media and Technology
Shashi Shekhar Vempati is widely known for his leadership roles in India’s public broadcasting and digital media space. He previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati, where he played a key role in modernising national broadcasters such as Doordarshan and All India Radio. He was also involved in managing Rajya Sabha TV during his tenure.
Beyond broadcasting, Vempati has worked in digital governance and technology initiatives. He is the co-founder of AI4India Org, an organisation focused on expanding access to Artificial Intelligence in India. He is also associated with BharatGen as a board member.
His experience also includes leadership roles such as CEO of Rajya Sabha TV and Niti Digital. In 2023, he served as the Chairperson of the Science and Technology Communication Apex Advisory Committee, contributing to science communication strategies in the country.
Apart from his administrative and technical contributions, Vempati is also an author. He has written the book “Collective Spirit Concrete Action – Mann ki Baat and its Influence on India”, which explores the impact of the Prime Minister’s radio programme on public communication.
