The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday that the severe cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ has weakened into a deep depression over coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana.

As of 8:30 am on October 29, the cyclone was stationed near latitude 17.3°N and longitude 81.2°E — about 50 km south-southeast of Bhadrachalam, 110 km east of Khammam, 130 km south-southwest of Malkangiri, and 220 km south-southwest of Jagdalpur.

‘Montha’ is inching towards north-northwestwards at around 15 kmph and is likely to weaken further into a depression over the next six hours, while continuing its path across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and south Chhattisgarh.

Meanwhile, the IMD said the depression over the east-central Arabian Sea has remained nearly stationary during the past few hours. At 8:30 am, it was positioned near latitude 17.9°N and longitude 69.2°E, roughly 410 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 430 km southwest of Veraval, and 560 km west-northwest of Panjim.

The cyclone is expected to move northeastwards across the east-central Arabian Sea over the next 36 hours, though it currently poses no significant threat to the west coast.

Cyclone ‘Montha’ made landfall late Tuesday evening, crossing the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam (Puducherry) coasts between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, south of Kakinada.

The cyclone’s movement is being continuously assessed through Doppler radars at Machilipatnam and Visakhapatnam.

Heavy rain and gusty winds impacted the districts of West Godavari, Krishna, and East Godavari, with warnings issued for flooding in low-lying areas on late Tuesday evening.

The landfall process was completed shortly after midnight.

Damage caused by the cyclone

Andhra Pradesh

One woman died in Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district after a tree, uprooted by strong winds, fell on her.

The cyclone damaged standing crops across about 38,000 hectares and horticulture crops in around 1.38 lakh hectares in Andhra Pradesh.

The cyclone made landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh around 7 pm on Tuesday.

After the cyclone made landfall, it left a trail of destruction between Manginapudi and Machilipatnam, marked by fallen trees and damaged electric poles, which were cleared by NDRF members.

Police in Andhra Pradesh unclogged traffic on National Highway 16 early Wednesday morning after a huge tree fell down in Anakapalli town, easing traffic congestion.

Odisha

As severe cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ weakened into a cyclonic storm while moving through neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, several parts of Odisha, including the state’s capital Bhubaneswar, witnessed heavy rains on Wednesday.

Several instances of landslides, uprooting of trees, and damage to houses have been reported from various districts, an official at the Special Relief Commissioner’s office said.

Light-to-moderate rain with wind speeds ranging from 30 kmph to 40 kmph was recorded across the coastal belt, including Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts, in the state, the IMD said.

Initial reports of damage came from eight southern Odisha districts, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur. In total, normal life was affected in 15 districts.

Coastal areas were hit by heavy rain and strong winds as the cyclone moved inland, leading to uprooted trees and power outages in several parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
