In a major diplomatic win for India, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) members on Monday condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack in the Tianjin Declaration of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The member states also called for action against perpetrators, organisers and sponsors of such attacks.
“The Member States strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025. They expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the dead and the wounded. They further stated that perpetrators, organisers and sponsors of such attacks must be brought to justice,” read the Tianjin declaration.
At least 26 people, mostly Hindu tourists from across the country, were killed in the barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22.
India squarely blamed Pakistan for the attack and launched a military operation early May under the codename ‘Operation Sindoor’ to avenge the killings of innocent civilians.
During his address at the 25th SCO Heads of State Council Summit, Modi had raised the issue of the Pahalgam attack, calling on member states to shun the double standards on terrorism.
With Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif present in the same hall, Modi flagged “the open support of terrorism by some countries”.
“Recently, we witnessed its worst form in Pahalgam,” the PM said, adding that the “attack was an open challenge to every country and every individual who believes in humanity.”
Meanwhile, the member states also welcomed the results of the 5th SCO Startup Forum held from April 3-5 in New Delhi earlier this year.
“The Declaration echoes the theme of ‘One Earth, One Family and One Future’. Member states welcomed the results of the 5th SCO Startup Forum (New Delhi, 3-5 April 2025) in deepening cooperation in the field of scientific and technical achievements and innovations,” it read.
The member states also noted the holding of the 20th meeting of the SCO Think Tank Forum (New Delhi, 21-22 May 2025).
”They also noted the contribution of the SCO Study Centre at the Indian Council for World Affairs (ICWA) in strengthening cultural and humanitarian exchanges,” the declaration read.
