Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Thursday emphasized the need for renewed political consensus in India’s legislatures to propel the country’s development.
He made this call while addressing the inaugural session of the 11th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association India region meeting at Vidhan Soudha in Bengaluru.
“When we speak of building trust and meeting people’s aspirations in the 21st century, we cannot have our legislative institutions derailed by disruptions and adjournments,” Harivansh said.
He highlighted that decades of rich debates in India’s legislative institutions have played a vital role in establishing trust among the public.
The Deputy Chairman’s remarks come amidst increasing disruptions in legislatures, which pose a serious challenge to the functioning of the legislature. He urged lawmakers to introspect whether their debates reflect the needs and aspirations of the common man.
Harivansh called for more dialogues on areas including, impact of technology, climate change and infrastructure upgradation.
The Deputy Chairman noted that the legislature has a critical role in reviewing obsolete laws, monitoring regulations, and building a roadmap for the future. He emphasized the need for a renewed political economy consensus on policies for a developed India.
