Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended his greetings to the nation on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima, underscoring the enduring relevance of the teachings of Gautama Buddha and their role in fostering harmony in society.

‎In a message posted on X, Prime Minister Modi said, “Best wishes on Buddha Purnima. Our commitment towards realising the ideals of Lord Buddha is very strong. May his thoughts deepen the spirit of joy and togetherness in our society.”

His remarks highlighted the continued emphasis by the government on promoting values such as peace, compassion and unity, which are central to Buddhist philosophy.

‎Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak, marks the birth, enlightenment and mahaparinirvana of Gautama Buddha and is observed by millions of followers across India and the world.

The day holds special significance in India, where several sites associated with Buddha’s life including Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar serve as major centres of pilgrimage and cultural heritage.

‎The Prime Minister’s message aligns with India’s broader efforts to project its rich spiritual traditions globally, particularly through initiatives that highlight the country’s Buddhist heritage as part of its cultural diplomacy.

Modi’s call to deepen “the spirit of joy and togetherness” comes at a time when public discourse often emphasises social cohesion and collective responsibility, themes that resonate strongly with the teachings of Buddha. His message adds to the chorus of greetings from leaders across the political spectrum, reflecting the festival’s universal appeal and its message of peace and harmony.
