Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held wide-ranging discussions with visiting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, focusing on strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and reviewing key regional and global security challenges, including developments in West Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
The meeting underscored the growing strategic convergence between New Delhi and Washington as both countries seek to deepen cooperation in defence, trade, critical technologies, energy security and regional stability amid shifting geopolitical realities.
Prime Minister Modi described the interaction as productive and reaffirmed India’s commitment to closer coordination with the United States on issues of international importance.
In a post on social media platform X after the meeting, Modi said he was “happy to receive” Secretary Rubio and highlighted the expanding scope of bilateral engagement.
“We discussed sustained progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security,” the Prime Minister said.
He added that India and the United States would continue to cooperate closely on matters of shared global concern. “India and the United States will continue to work closely for the global good,” he said.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Secretary Rubio briefed Modi on the progress made in bilateral cooperation across a broad spectrum of sectors, including defence, strategic technologies, trade and investment, connectivity, education, energy security and people-to-people ties.
The statement said Rubio also shared the United States’ perspective on several regional and global developments, including the evolving situation in West Asia.
During the talks, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s longstanding position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving international conflicts. He reaffirmed India’s support for global peace initiatives and stressed the need for peaceful solutions through engagement and negotiations.
The Prime Minister also conveyed warm greetings to US President Donald Trump through Rubio and expressed confidence in maintaining regular high-level exchanges between the two countries.
The meeting reflected the continuing momentum in India-US relations, which have expanded significantly over the past decade across strategic, economic and technological domains. Both nations increasingly view each other as indispensable partners in maintaining regional stability and advancing a rules-based international order.
Sharing details of the interaction, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the meeting as constructive and forward-looking.
“Great to join Secretary of State Marco Rubio for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Gor wrote on X.
“We had a productive discussion on ways to deepen U.S.-India cooperation across security, trade, and critical technologies — areas that strengthen both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific. India is a vital partner to the United States!” he added.
Rubio’s visit comes at a time when India and the United States are intensifying cooperation in strategic sectors ranging from semiconductors and emerging technologies to defence manufacturing, clean energy and counterterrorism. The two sides have also strengthened coordination through multilateral platforms such as the Quad, which includes India, the United States, Japan and Australia.
Over recent years, the bilateral partnership has witnessed major developments, including expanded military interoperability agreements, technology-sharing initiatives and growing defence procurement collaboration. Both countries have consistently underlined their shared commitment to ensuring a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region amid rising geopolitical competition.
Diplomatic observers view Rubio’s visit as part of sustained high-level engagement between the two democracies as they navigate evolving security challenges in Asia and beyond. The discussions are also seen as laying the groundwork for upcoming strategic dialogues involving the Quad and broader Indo-Pacific security architecture.
Rubio arrived in New Delhi on Saturday after concluding a visit to Kolkata, where he paid respects at the Missionaries of Charity’s Mother House. During his stay in the national capital, he is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, attend the dedication ceremony of the new US Embassy Support Annex Building and participate in a reception at Roosevelt House hosted by Ambassador Sergio Gor.
The visit assumes additional significance ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled to be held in New Delhi on May 26. Foreign ministers from India, the United States, Japan and Australia are expected to deliberate on Indo-Pacific security, maritime cooperation and regional developments, including the situation in West Asia.
As India and the United States continue to expand their strategic partnership, Saturday’s meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Secretary Rubio reinforced the growing alignment between the two countries on major global and regional issues, while signalling a shared commitment to deeper cooperation in an increasingly complex international environment.
