Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed his deep sadness over the passing of renowned film personality B Saroja Devi, who left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. In a heartfelt message, PM Modi remembered her as “an exemplary icon of Indian cinema and culture.”
“Saddened by the passing of the noted film personality, B. Saroja Devi Ji. She will be remembered as an exemplary icon of Indian cinema and culture. Her diverse performances left an indelible mark across generations. Her works, spanning different languages and covering diverse themes highlighted her versatile nature. My condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi said in a message on X.
B Saroja Devi was a celebrated actress who acted in over 200 films across Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi languages. She was known for her expressive acting, elegance, and versatility, earning her titles like “Abhinaya Saraswathi” (Saraswathi of acting) in Kannada and “Kannadathu Paingili” (Kannada’s Parrot) in Tamil. Her notable performances include films like “Kittur Chennamma”, “Anbe Vaa”, “Sri Krishna Tulabharam”, and “Sasural”.
Throughout her illustrious career, B Saroja Devi received numerous accolades, including, Padma Bhushan (1992), Padma Shri (1969), Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Government of India and various state governments.
B Saroja Devi’s demise marks the end of an era in Indian cinema, and her legacy will continue to inspire generations of artists and fans. As per media reports, B Saroja Devi died at the age of 87 on Monday due to age-related ailments at her residence in Malleswaram, Bengaluru.
