Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid rich tribute to the legendary Ahom general, Lachit Borphukan, marking the occasion of Lachit Diwas.
PM Modi hailed Borphukan as a profound “symbol of courage, patriotism, and true leadership,” emphasising how his heroism continues to inspire generations.
“On Lachit Diwas, we remember Lachit Borphukan, a symbol of courage, patriotism and true leadership. His heroism continues to inspire generations. He played a key role in safeguarding the exemplary culture of Assam,” PM Modi posted on his handle X.
Lachit Borphukan is celebrated for leading the Ahom army to a decisive victory against the formidable Mughal forces in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat. This historic triumph is commemorated in Assam as a powerful symbol of resistance against imperialism.
The commemoration, organised by the Lachit Borphukan Memorial Committee, saw cultural programs and events held across the state of Assam. Borphukan’s enduring legacy as a national hero and his strategic prowess are seen as an inspiration for Indians to protect their rich culture and heritage.
