Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep grief over the sudden demise of former Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi, describing it as an “irreparable loss” not only for Suriname but also for the global Indian diaspora.
In a post shared on X, Modi wrote, “Deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden demise of my friend and the former President of Suriname, Mr Chandrikapersad Santokhi Ji. This is not only an irreparable loss to Suriname but also to the global Indian diaspora.”
Recalling his personal interactions with Santokhi, the Prime Minister highlighted the late leader’s dedication to public service and his role in strengthening bilateral ties. “I fondly recall my many meetings with him. His tireless service to Suriname and his efforts in strengthening India–Suriname relations were clearly reflected in our interactions,” Modi said.
Santokhi, who served as President from 2020 to 2025, was widely regarded as a key figure in fostering closer cultural and diplomatic relations between India and Suriname, a country with a significant population of Indian origin. His tenure saw renewed engagement between the two nations, particularly in trade, culture, and diaspora connections.
Modi also noted Santokhi’s deep appreciation for Indian heritage, highlighting a symbolic moment that resonated widely. “He had a special fondness for Indian culture. He won several hearts when he took the oath in Sanskrit,” he said.
Suriname’s historical ties with India date back to the 19th century, when indentured labourers from India were taken to the Dutch colony. Today, people of Indian descent form a substantial portion of Suriname’s population, giving the bilateral relationship a uniquely shared cultural foundation.
Modi extended condolences to the bereaved family and the people of Suriname. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Suriname in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” he said, while also sharing photographs from his meetings with the late leader.
Santokhi’s passing is expected to be widely mourned across political and diaspora communities, with tributes pouring in from leaders and citizens who remember him as a bridge between cultures and nations.
