Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar on his birth anniversary, which also marks the beginning of his centenary year, and called on citizens, especially the youth, to draw inspiration from his life and values.

‎In a post on X, Modi hailed Chandra Shekhar as “a mass leader blessed with courage, conviction and a deep commitment to democratic values,” and said the occasion serves as a reminder to renew efforts towards building a “prosperous and just India” in line with his vision.

“This year marks the start of his 100th birth anniversary and is a time to reiterate our commitment to realising his vision for a prosperous and just India,” the Prime Minister said.

‎Highlighting the late leader’s deep connection with the people, Modi said Chandra Shekhar was “firmly rooted in the soil of India and sensitive to the aspirations of ordinary citizens,” adding that he brought “simplicity and clarity to public life.” He also recalled his personal interactions with him, noting, “I recall the instances when I had the opportunity to meet him and exchange perspectives for the development of our nation.”

‎Encouraging younger generations to engage with India’s political and intellectual heritage, Modi urged them to study Chandra Shekhar’s ideas and contributions. “I call upon the youth of India to read more about his thoughts and efforts towards India’s progress,” he said.

‎Chandra Shekhar, who served as Prime Minister from November 1990 to June 1991 during a politically turbulent period, was known for his independent streak and strong grassroots connect.

Often referred to as the “Young Turk” in his early years, he emerged as a prominent socialist voice and remained widely respected for his candour, commitment to democratic principles, and focus on rural India and public integrity.
