Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) supremo H D Deve Gowda on his 93rd birthday, lauding his long public life and dedication to the welfare of marginalised communities.

In a message posted on social media platform X, Modi praised Deve Gowda’s contribution to the country and his grasp of policy matters.

“Best wishes to Shri HD Deve Gowda Ji on his birthday. He has made an outstanding contribution to our nation during his long years in public life. He is known for his deep understanding of policy-related issues and passion towards serving the marginalised. Praying for his long and healthy life,” the Prime Minister said.

Deve Gowda, who served as India’s 11th Prime Minister from June 1996 to April 1997, remains one of the most prominent leaders from Karnataka. Beginning his political journey in the 1950s, he steadily rose through the ranks of state politics, serving in both the legislative assembly and legislative council before becoming Chief Minister of Karnataka in 1994.

Widely recognised for championing agriculture, irrigation and rural development, Deve Gowda emerged as a consensus choice to head the United Front coalition government at the Centre in 1996 during a crucial phase in coalition-era politics.

Despite stepping down as Prime Minister after less than a year in office, the veteran leader has continued to remain active in national politics. He currently serves as a Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka and continues to guide the Janata Dal (Secular), which remains an influential regional force in the state.

Political leaders cutting across party lines also extended birthday greetings to Deve Gowda, remembering his contribution to coalition politics and his consistent advocacy for farmers and rural communities.
