Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and destruction caused by a powerful earthquake in the Mindanao region of the Philippines and reiterated India’s support for the affected people and government.

‎In a message posted on social media platform X, Modi extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the disaster.

‎“Saddened by the loss of lives and destruction caused by today’s earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured. India stands in solidarity with the people and the Government of the Philippines,” the Prime Minister said.

‎The earthquake struck the southern island of Mindanao, resulting in casualties and damage to infrastructure, according to preliminary reports. Emergency responders and rescue teams were deployed across affected areas as authorities worked to assess the scale of the damage and provide relief to those impacted.

‎Modi’s message underscored India’s longstanding commitment to standing with nations affected by natural disasters. Over the years, New Delhi has consistently offered humanitarian assistance and expressed solidarity with countries facing crises, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

‎India and the Philippines have strengthened bilateral relations in recent years, expanding cooperation in areas including defence, maritime security, trade, disaster management and people-to-people exchanges. The two countries have also worked closely on issues relating to regional stability and security in the Indo-Pacific.

‎The Prime Minister’s message came amid an outpouring of condolences from leaders and governments around the world following the earthquake. The disaster once again highlighted the Philippines’ vulnerability to seismic activity owing to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active earthquake and volcanic zones.

‎As rescue and relief operations continue in Mindanao, authorities are expected to release more details on the extent of casualties and damage. Through Modi’s message, India reaffirmed its support for the Philippines as it grapples with the aftermath of the natural calamity.
