In a landmark push for next-generation urban mobility, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated and dedicated development projects worth approximately ₹12,930 crore in Meerut, significantly strengthening connectivity and infrastructure across western Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region (NCR).
The Prime Minister flagged off the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat train from the Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station before travelling by metro to Meerut South Station. At the venue, he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development initiatives and addressed a large public gathering.
A key highlight of the visit was the dedication of the entire 82-km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor to the nation. With the inauguration of the remaining stretches, the country’s first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) is now fully operational, promising high-speed, seamless connectivity between Delhi and Meerut.
Calling the moment transformative, Modi said, “Today, along with Uttar Pradesh, the entire country is witnessing the dawn of a new era of world-class infrastructure. With the inauguration of the new sections of the Meerut Metro, the Namo Bharat train, and the Regional Rapid Transit System, life will become even simpler, smoother, and more convenient for the people of NCR.”
The integrated corridor is expected to drastically reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut while offering efficient daily commuting options for thousands of passengers. Highlighting what he described as a shift in governance culture, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of timely execution of public works.
“Our work culture is such that once a project’s foundation stone is laid, we work day and night to ensure its completion. That is why projects no longer remain stuck or delayed as they used to in the past,” he said.
Recalling his association with both projects, he added, “Whether it is the Namo Bharat service or the Metro service, I had the opportunity to lay the foundation stones for both. And today, I have also had the privilege of inaugurating them.”
In a first for the country, Namo Bharat and Metro services will operate from the same station and share track infrastructure — a move aimed at ensuring seamless urban and regional mobility.
“This is happening for the first time in the country — that both the Namo Bharat and Metro trains will run from the same station and on the same track,” Modi said. “This means that from a single platform, you will be able to travel within the city, and from the same station, you can travel directly to and from Delhi.”
Officials say the integration model could serve as a blueprint for future transit systems across India, aligning with the Centre’s focus on sustainable, multimodal transport networks.
The Prime Minister also linked India’s expanding infrastructure footprint with its rising global stature.
“Many developed countries around the world are now entering into trade agreements with India. Today, developed nations are eager to partner with India because they see their future in India’s growth. They see hope in India’s youth power,” he said.
“Today, the world believes that India is a force capable of providing solutions to the challenges of the 21st century,” he added.
Invoking the legacy of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, Modi noted the deep historical and political connection of the Meerut–Hapur region with the veteran leader.
“The Meerut–Hapur and surrounding region has witnessed Chaudhary Charan Singh ji’s vision from the very beginning,” he said, adding that it was his government’s privilege to confer the Bharat Ratna upon him.
With the commissioning of the full corridor and the launch of integrated urban transit services, Meerut’s infrastructure landscape has entered a new phase. The large-scale investment is expected to catalyze economic growth, enhance regional mobility, and reinforce the Centre’s emphasis on future-ready, high-speed transport systems in western Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
