Although the government agencies were engaged in the sterilisation of street dogs to control their population, 2,12,968 cases of dogbite have been registered in the past 33 months in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
This was stated in a written reply to a question tabled by Mubarak Gul (NC) in the J&K Assembly on Tuesday.
The CM informed that these dog bites were recorded between 2022 and 2025. He said 48,998 dogs have been sterilised between June 2023 and September 2025. Of these, 13,730 were sterilised in Jammu and 27,237 in Srinagar.
The Kashmir division reported 114,498 bites against 98,470 in the Jammu region.
The highest number of 54,889 dog bites were reported in the Jammu district, followed by 36,406 in the Srinagar district. The Anantnag district reported 26,453 bogbites and Baramulla 18,563.
The Kathua and Udhampur districts of Jammu also reported a high incidence of dog bites.
The CM stated that the municipal corporations of Srinagar and Jammu were taking steps to control the population of street dogs.
In addition, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has been consistently working to raise public awareness about the safety measures to prevent dog bites, educate the public about the animal birth control and anti-rabies vaccination programme, and adoption of street dogs.
