In a recorded speech delivered via social media, B Sudershan Reddy, the Opposition’s vice-presidential candidate, made a heartfelt appeal to members of Parliament to vote in the interest of the nation, emphasizing the importance of protecting democratic institutions and upholding constitutional values.
“I will appeal to all MPs, regardless of their political affiliations, to cast their conscience vote in this election. The Vice-President’s office, particularly as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, requires impartiality, dignity, and a commitment to constitutional values,” Reddy stated, highlighting the significance of the role.
Reddy’s appeal came ahead of the vice-presidential election scheduled for September 9, where he will be contesting against C P Radhakrishnan, the ruling NDA candidate. The Opposition has positioned this election as a crucial test of India’s democratic institutions, with Reddy’s candidacy seen as a symbol of the country’s commitment to constitutional values.
Intellectuals and civil society leaders have backed Reddy’s candidature, citing his impeccable integrity and commitment to social justice. They urged MPs to rise above party lines and support Reddy to protect India’s democratic traditions.
While Reddy has received support from various quarters, including Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar, some victims of Naxal violence have criticized his role in a 2011 Supreme Court judgment that halted the Salwa Judum, a government-backed initiative to counter Naxalism. They have appealed to MPs not to support Reddy’s candidacy.
The outcome of the election, though arithmetically tilted towards the ruling side, the Opposition is relying on cross-party support and moral authority to challenge the ruling candidate.
