The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested a Security Inspector posted in the Orient Area of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) at Brajarajnagar in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from an employee.

According to the CBI, the case was registered on June 11, following a complaint alleging that the accused, identified as Banshi Ram, had sought a bribe of Rs 5,000 from an MCL employee. The inspector allegedly demanded the money in return for allotting Sunday duty to the complainant on a rotational basis.

After verifying the allegations, the CBI laid a trap and apprehended the accused red-handed while he was allegedly accepting the bribe amount of Rs 5,000 from the complainant.

The accused was taken into custody and is expected to be produced before the competent court on Friday. The agency said further investigation is in progress.

The arrest underscores the CBI’s continued efforts to curb corruption in public sector undertakings and ensure transparency in administrative processes, said the agency.
