Noida International Airport( NIA) is set to become not just a modern aviation hub, but a vibrant symbol of Indian culture and tradition.
Officials say its architectural and interior design thoughtfully incorporates the rich heritage of Uttar Pradesh, offering passengers a unique cultural experience. The airport’s design prominently showcases elements inspired by traditional havelis of Uttar Pradesh.
Architectural features such as arches, courtyards, and traditional structural motifs will connect travelers with the state’s rich cultural legacy. The terminal is being developed as a multi-level structure inspired by the Ganga ghats, evoking the experience of the iconic riverfronts of Varanasi and Haridwar.
The stepped design, open spaces, and carefully planned lighting aim to create a serene and spiritual atmosphere. Traditional handicrafts from various states across India will be used in the airport’s aesthetic design.
This initiative will not only showcase the country’s diverse artistic traditions but also provide a global platform for local and national artisans.
Officials said the design of Noida International Airport stands as an example of how cultural identity can be seamlessly integrated into modern infrastructure, making it distinct and unique with its blend of high-tech facilities and traditional themes.
With 8 years of continuous effort, coordination, supervision and review, Noida International Airport (NIA) has now become a reality. After receiving the aerodrome licence in March 2026 and with the inauguration of Phase 1 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the airport is now fully ready for operations.
The ambitious project began in 2017, when site clearance was received in July and NOC from the Ministry of Home Affairs was obtained in October. This was the phase when the foundation was laid to develop Jewar as a global airport.
In 2018 Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) was formed, giving the project an institutional framework. In 2020, Zurich Airport International AG was selected as the concessionaire and an agreement was signed.
After financial closure and approval of the master plan in August 2021, the appointed date timeline was declared in October 2021, paving the way for the execution of this mega project. Construction work began in March 2022 and Tata Projects was appointed as the EPC Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor.
From 2022 to 2024, all major tasks were completed within set timelines, reflecting strong project management efficiency. In October 2025, the calibration flight was successfully conducted, and in March 2026, the aerodrome licence was obtained. With this, the airport became fully ready for operations.
Officials say Noida International Airport is set to become one of the most modern airports in the country due to its advanced and environmentally friendly infrastructure.
The Terminal 1 being built here is not only large in terms of size and capacity, but will also set a new benchmark in terms of technological innovation and passenger facilities.
The airport has been constructed using LC3 limestone (calcined clay cement) technology on a large scale for the first time in the country. This low-carbon construction material has a lower environmental impact compared to traditional cement, making the project an excellent example of eco-friendly infrastructure.
Spread over about 1.37 lakh square meters, Terminal 1 is being equipped with advanced arrangements keeping passenger convenience in mind. It will have 48 check-in counters, 20 self baggage drop facilities and 9 security check lanes, ensuring a fast and smooth experience for passengers.
For international passengers, 9 immigration counters each will be available along with fast-track facilities, ensuring time efficiency and seamless movement.
For domestic flights, 10 aerobridges and 2 bus boarding gates have been arranged, while for international flights, 2 aerobridges and 1 bus boarding gate will be available.
This division will ensure organized and efficient operations, preventing any inconvenience in passenger movement.
The airport has been designed with the capacity to handle about 30 aircraft take-offs and landings per hour. In addition, the airport’s annual cargo handling capacity has been set at 2.5 lakh metric tonnes, which will establish it as a strong logistics hub.
The Noida International Airport, which is steadily progressing towards becoming the country’s largest international airport, is also rapidly advancing toward being integrated with one of the most efficient connectivity networks in India. It is being linked at both national and international levels through road, rail, metro, and high-speed rail networks.
As a result, people from North India will now head to Jewar Airport instead of Delhi to catch international flights.
