NBCC begins construction of Institute of Eminence at Delhi University’s North Campus


NBCC (India) Ltd, a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has begun the construction of the Institute of Eminence (IoE) at the University of Delhi, North Campus, following a successful Bhoomi Poojan ceremony held on September 23, 2025.

The event was graced by Yogesh Singh, the Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi, Dr. Vikas Gupta, Registrar, University of Delhi, Prof Balaram Pani, Dean of Colleges, Prof. Rajni Abbi, Proctor, University of Delhi, and K.P. Mahadevaswamy, Chairman & Managing Director, NBCC, Saleem Ahmad, Director (Projects), NBCC and Shri Rajeev Kumar, Chief General Manager along with dignitaries and officials from both organizations.

The Inter-disciplinary Academic, Administrative, and Research Building for the Institution of Eminence at Maurice Nagar, University of Delhi, will be developed by NBCC on a 4.8 acre site at an approved cost of approximately Rs.330 crore. Conceived as a model for green and future-ready infrastructure, the project will exemplify best practices in sustainable institutional development.

Aiming for a 3-Star GRIHA rating, the facility will set a new benchmark for environmentally responsible construction in academic settings across India.

The new Academic Building will have a built-up area of approximately 4.55 Lakh Sq. ft, comprising Basement +Ground +7 Floors with a building height of 35.5 mtrs approximately.

The building will significantly enhance the campus facilities, increasing its capacity to 1800 students (Approx). The expanded infrastructure will also include Director & allied offices, 9 Lecture theater (100 Pax), 16 Nos Class rooms (65 Pax), 2 Nos Seminar Halls (150 Pax), a Modern Library, 6 Nos Multipurpose rooms, 75 no’s office space for teaching staff, 16 Nos meeting room, 11 nos. Modern Labs designed to support the vibrant cultural, entertainment, and academic life of the University.

Sustainability and innovation at the core

The IoE project is an integrated response to the evolving needs of higher education, combining ecological responsibility with architectural innovation.

Key features include: 500,000-litre capacity, rainwater harvesting system; 75 kW Rooftop Solar Power installation; Organic Waste Converter for on-site waste management; Energy-Efficient Fixtures, including LED lighting and solar-powered street lights; 30 charging stations for Electric Vehicles (EV) 20% Green Coverage, integrated landscape features and preservation of existing trees; Designing of construction around the existing trees.

Future ready academic facilities

The Institute will offer a range of flexible learning environments, including smart classrooms, laboratories, libraries, meeting rooms and collaborative spaces.

Special focus has been given to modular layouts for adaptability, barrier-free access and wide corridors, central courtyards and landscape plazas for interaction, sun-shading and passive design to enhance thermal performance, low-maintenance, and durable materials for long-term resilience.

The ground floor will have library and cafeteria followed by first to fourth floors comprising labs, classrooms, lecture/multipurpose halls.

Fifth to Seventh floor will have spaces for staff rooms, dining hall and meeting rooms etc.

Parking provisions include about 300 vehicle spaces, including basement parking, optimizing land use while supporting operational efficiency.

With the commencement of the Institute of Eminence project at the University of Delhi, the NBCC reaffirmed its dedication to building infrastructure that not only meets the highest standards of design and functionality but also aligns with the nation’s vision for sustainable development and world-class education.
