Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday congratulated the people of Assam after the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was passes in the state Legislative Assembly with a voice vote.

Shah said that the UCC has been the BJP’s resolve since its foundation and the saffron party-led state governments are establishing uniform law for every citizen.

“Congratulations to the people of Assam. Uniform Civil Code has been the BJP’s resolve since the day of its foundation. Under PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s leadership, BJP-led state governments are establishing uniform law for every citizen,” Shah said on X.

He further noted that Assam has joined Uttarakhand and Gujarat to have passed the UCC Bill.

“On this occasion, I congratulate Chief Minister of Assam Shri @himantabiswa Ji and all the legislators who supported this bill,” he said.

The Home Minister asserted that the BJP, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, is “committed to enshrining the principle of equality before the law in every part of the country.”

Shah’s reaction came shortly after Assam passed the UCC Bill, which aims to put in place a common legal framework for governing marriage, divorce, succession, live-in relationships and other related issues irrespective of religion.

The Opposition had demanded that the Bill be sent to a select committee.

With the passage of the proposed legislation, Assam has now emerged as the third state, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, to pass a Uniform Civil Code Bill.
