Commercial flight services commenced at Noida International Airport in Jewar on Monday, bringing one of India’s largest greenfield aviation projects into operation and adding a new international gateway to the Delhi-NCR region.
The start of passenger operations is expected to ease future air traffic demand in the National Capital Region and improve connectivity across northern India. Developed under a public-private partnership model, the airport has been positioned as a key addition to the country’s expanding aviation network.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu inaugurated commercial operations at the airport.
The first scheduled flight to arrive at the newly operational facility was IndiGo flight 6E-2278 from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow. After landing in Jewar, the aircraft departed for Bengaluru, where it was scheduled to arrive later in the day.
Major infrastructure project
Noida International Airport has been developed as the second international airport serving Delhi-NCR alongside Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The project is among the country’s largest greenfield airport developments.
According to information shared by the Prime Minister’s Office, the first phase has been built at an investment of about Rs 11,200 crore through the PPP model.
Built to handle large aircraft, the airport has a 3,900-metre runway along with an Instrument Landing System (ILS) and advanced airfield lighting. The infrastructure will allow airlines to operate flights round the clock, including during poor weather conditions.
Officials believe the facility will improve connectivity across India and overseas destinations while creating new opportunities for business and economic growth in western Uttar Pradesh and the NCR.
